"Lonely Again (Naturally)" is a vocal by Irish singer-songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan. It was released in 1972 at the same time as – but not included on – his anthology Dorsum to Front, and was a popular hit.

The single spent six non-consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 singles nautical chart, which ranked information technology as the No. 2 song for 1972. In Casey Kasem's American Height forty of the 1970s, "Lonely Again (Naturally)" ranked as the fifth most-pop vocal of the decade (Debby Boone's "Y'all Light Upwardly My Life" was No. 1). It also spent 6 weeks at No. 1 on the Easy Listening chart,[4] and reached No. 3 on the UK Singles Chart.[5] The vocal is included on O'Sullivan'due south The Drupe Vest of Gilbert O'Sullivan anthology (2004) on the EMI record label. Big Jim Sullivan plays the guitar break in the original recorded version of the song.

The song was involved in an important 1991 court example which held that sampling of music – as had been washed with O'Sullivan's recording – can constitute copyright infringement.

Lyrics [edit]

"Alone Once more (Naturally)" is a melancholy, introspective ballad. In the first poetry, the vocalist contemplates suicide after having been left "in the lurch at a church"; in the second, he wonders if there is a God; finally, he laments the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said the vocal is not autobiographical: for example, his mother was alive during its limerick, and he was non close to his begetter, who was cruel to his female parent and died when the singer was 11 years old.[vi]

The song received all-encompassing radio airplay in the months after its release, and was critically praised. O'Sullivan commented that "Neil Diamond covered 'Alone Over again (Naturally)' and said he couldn't believe a 21-year-old wrote it, but for me it was just one song I had written".[7] Neil Sedaka stating when he covered the song in 2020 that he wished that he himself had written the song, because its complexity was more typical of someone much older than 21.[8]

Copyright lawsuit [edit]

Grand Upright Music, Ltd v. Warner Bros. Records Inc. was a copyright instance heard by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. The instance pitted O'Sullivan against Biz Markie later the rapper sampled O'Sullivan'due south song "Alone Again (Naturally)". The court ruled that sampling without permission tin be copyright infringement. The judgment changed the hip hop music manufacture, requiring that music sampling be preapproved by the original copyright owners to avert a lawsuit.[25]

Maison Ikkoku [edit]

This song and O'Sullivan's "Get Downward" were featured equally the opening and ending for episode 24 of the popular Japanese anime Maison Ikkoku, based on the manga by Rumiko Takahashi. O'Sullivan was signed to production visitor Kitty Film's associated record label, Kitty Records, which wanted to use the anime's popularity equally a manner to promote the singer in Japan. According to series manager Kazuo Yamazaki, the songs were dropped after merely ane episode because they were unpopular with viewers. They were non included on the English language-linguistic communication American release of the anime, replaced by the previously used Japanese theme songs.

Several artists have covered the vocal. A recording by Andy Williams was the title runway for the U.S. release of his anthology of encompass songs later on in 1972. Among the notable covers are versions by Nina Simone, included as a bonus track on the 1988 digital reissue of her 1982 album Forage on My Wings; and by Lazlo Bane'south frontman Republic of chad Fischer, from the 2009 animated picture Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs. Both feature substantially rewritten lyrics; Simone's version savagely exhumes her troubled relationship with her late father, whereas Fischer's humorously explores the want of an acorn for the fictional prehistoric squirrel who one time chased information technology. In 2015, Diana Krall released a duet version with Michael Bublé on her anthology Wallflower.[26]
